SLIPPED AND FELL INTO EXCAVATION

AN EMPLOYEE OF A GAS AND ELECTRIC UTILITY WAS STANDING ON THE SIDEWALK AT THE NORTHWEST CORNER OF AN EXCAVATION FOR A VALVE PIT INSTALLATION. THE EXCAVATION WAS 47 INCHES DEEP WITH THE VALVE PIT IN THE MIDDLE AN ADDITIONAL 3.5 FEET DEEP. THE EMPLOYEE TURNED TO GO TO HIS TRUCK FOR LUNCH AND LOST HIS FOOTING. HE FELL INTO THE PIT, STRIKING HIS HEAD ON THE CONCRETE CASING OF THE VALVE PIT WALL. HE SUSTAINED A CONCUSSION AND A FRACTURED SKULL. THE EMPLOYEE WAS HOSPITALIZED FOR HIS INJURIES.
