Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170718878
Event: 02/10/1993
Employee's thumb partially severed by Skilsaw

Employee #1, a carpenter, was going to make a cut in an approximately 5 in. by 15 in. piece of plywood. He held the plywood at an angle against a sawhorse with his left hand and held the Skilsaw with his right. He turned on the saw and started to make the cut. As he pushed the saw with his right hand, he lost his footing on the wet plywood subfloor. The sudden movement caused the saw to come into contact with his left thumb, severing most of the first joint. His thumb was surgically reattached. Employee #1 was wearing rubber boots at the time of the accident. If the floor had not been wet, Employee #1 believes that he would not have lost his footing, and the accident would not have occurred.
