Employee's amputates hand in re-roll machine

At approximately 5:20 p.m. on July 8, 2003, Employee #1 was brushing and cleaning the excess scale from the top of re-roll National Reduceroll machine. The machine reduced the thickness and increases length of metal stock. Employee #1 was standing in front of the machine removing the control panel to make an adjustment, because the machine was compressing metal into an 0.5-in. thickness instead of a 3-in. thickness. He made contact with the unguarded foot petal, causing the rolls to activate and crush his right hand and four fingers. He was hospitalized and treated for the amputation.
