Sliding Object Strikes Employee Causing Fall

At approximately 9:00 a.m. on March 22, 2004, two employees were sent to complete the reroofing of an old barn. Employee #1 was carrying a bundle of shingles down the approximate 8-in-12 pitch roof, on the east side, from the ridge to the work area near the eaves. Another bundle of shingles slid down the roof and hit Employee #1 causing him to lose his balance and slide down and off the edge of the roof. Employee #1 fell approximately 21 ft to the ground. Fall protection was not in use at the location in spite of the fact that most of the roof was provided with roof jacks. Employee #1 suffered a broken left foot, broken right heel and a compression fracture of the Number 2 lumbar vertebrae.
