Event: 04/10/2003
Employee Injures Hand When Caught in Conveyor

At approximately 4:30 p.m. on April 10, 2003, Employee #1, of Mervin's store, was using a powered rubber belt conveyor to transfer incoming store stock from a truck at the loading dock to the second floor warehouse. Employee #1 was working with another employee. As they moved sheets, blankets, and area rugs up the conveyor, a rug reached the top and instead of falling off the end of the belt, stuck to the belt and started to roll underneath it. Employee #1 reached for the rug and her left hand was pulled into the pinch point behind the end roll, between the belt and an idler support roller located four inches down the return run from the end roll. The belt pulled her left hand into the pinch point up to her wrist then abraded the back of her wrist until the conveyor stalled or was shut off. Employee #1 sustained fractures to the ring and little fingers on her left hand. She also sustained fractures to the bones in the back of her hand which required surgical pinning. Employee #1 was hospitalized for her injuries.
