Investigation Summary
On October 22, 2002, Employee #1 was hauling grapes picked from a vineyard. He was descending a 15-in. grade hill on a dirt haul road on a tractor with a gondola load of grapes on a 2-wheel trailer behind. The tractor was a Kubota L4350DT wheel tractor, Serial Number 61566, rated for towing 6600 lb, considering towing a 4000-lb load and approximately 900-lb weights of a gondola and a trailer. Employee #1 was not wearing a seat belt provided on the ROPS-equipped tractor. While Employee #1 was driving the tractor down hill, the trailer jerked and caused tractor to go towards downhill dropoff. The employee turned tractor toward uphill bank. The tractor ran up bank and it overturned onto a side, throwing Employee #1 off. Employee #1 suffered broken pelvis. He was hospitalized for approximately one week.
