Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170751713
Event: 11/05/1993
FALL - TREE LIMB SUPPORTING SAFETY LINE BROKE

A line-clearance tree trimmer was topping trees along a new overhead power line. He used his tree climbers to climb the tree to a height of about 30 feet and used a safety line from his belt to tie in. He then looped a second safety line that also was attached to his safety belt around the tree trunk above him, placing it over a limb that later was discovered to be rotten. The employee did not groove the tree at the trunk because of that limb and because of the presence of limb knots. After topping the tree, he unhooked his first line from around the tree, hooked his chain saw to his belt, and, using the secured second safety line, started down. As he came down, he went slightly around the trunk, which caused the second safety line to rotate onto the rotten limb. The limb broke, causing the employee to fall about 25 feet. He was hospitalized for injuries he sustained in the fall.
