Employee's fingers lacerated in saw blade

Employee #1 was reripping a 1/4 in. by 12 in. piece of wood on a circular hand-fed rip saw. The guard was not in place. When the saw blade pulled the wood down through the opening in the top insert of the table saw, Employee #1's fingers struck against the saw blade. Three of his fingers and his thumb were severely lacerated.
