Event: 04/08/1992

Three employees burned by hot ammonia liquor

At approximately 9:00 a.m. on or about April 8, 1992, several employees were standing near the west ammonia liquor strainer, observing the east strainer. They were looking for leaks in the seal that had just been installed. The west strainer was taken off line by shutting only the inlet valve and was being steam cleaned. The west strainer failed, blowing a hole measuring 6 inches by 15 inches in the side. The heated ammonia liquor (190 degrees F) escaped and hit Employees #1, #2, and #3. Employees #1 and #3 were hospitalized; Employee #3 was released the next day. Employee #2 was treated and released the same day.
