EMPLOYEE SUSTAINED HEAD INJURY WHEN HIT BY FALLING LUMBER

AT ABOUT 2:40 PM ON AUGUST 7, 1990, EMPLOYEE #1 WAS AT THE FOOT OF A SCAFFOLD PREPARING TO CLIMB UP AND RETURN TO WORK WHEN A FELLOW WORKER ON THE SCAFFOLD OVERHEAD ACCIDENTALLY GRABBED ONTO A LOOSELY NAILED PIECE OF 2 INCH BY 6 INCH BY 10 FEET LUMBER. THE LUMBER FELL DOWN FROM A HEIGHT OF ABOUT 9 FEET AND HIT EMPLOYEE #1 ON THE HEAD. EMPLOYEE #1 WAS TAKEN TO ARCADIA METHODIST HOSPITAL, TREATED FOR A HEAD INJURY, AND RELEASED THAT NIGHT. THE CAUSE OF THE INJURY WAS THE EMPLOYEE'S FAILURE TO WEAR APPROVED HEAD PROTECTION WHILE EXPOSED TO THE HAZARD OF FALLING OR FLYING OBJECTS.
