EMPLOYEE'S FINGERS INJURED WHEN CAUGHT IN PRINTING PRESS

AT ABOUT 8:15 A.M. ON JULY 1, 1992, EMPLOYEE #1, A WORKER AT THE TREASURE CHEST ADVERTISING COMPANY, GOT HIS HAND CAUGHT IN THE IN-RUNNING WATER FORM AND WATER VIBRATOR ROLLS OF THE "HARRIS N 900" PRINTING PRESS. THE EMPLOYER PRINTS FLYER ADVERTISEMENTS FOR VARIOUS SUPERMARKETS AND OTHER RETAIL STORES. EMPLOYEE #1 WAS HIRED BY THE EMPLOYER IN 1975 AS A JOGGER OR UTILITY MAN. HE WAS PROMOTED TO ROLL MAN IN 1979, TO ASSISTANT OPERATOR IN 1983, AND TO OPERATOR SHIFT C IN 1987. ON THE DAY OF THE ACCIDENT, EMPLOYEE #1 NOTICED THAT A LOOSE PIECE OF MYLAR HAD GOTTEN STUCK OR LODGED BETWEEN THE WATER PAN ROLLER AND THE WATER TRAY. AS HE REACHED TO RETRIEVE THE MYLAR, HIS LEFT HAND GOT CAUGHT IN THE IN-RUNNING WATER FORM AND WATER VIBRATOR ROLLS. HE SUFFERED BADLY SMASHED MIDDLE, RING AND SMALL FINGERS AND MAY LOSE HIS SMALL FINGER ENTIRELY. HE WAS TRANSPORTED TO THE SANDIMAS HOSPITAL AND LATER TRANSFERRED TO LAC/USC MEDICAL CENTER THE SAME DAY. A CITATION WAS ISSUED FOR A VIOLATION OF T8CCR 3314(A) (SERIOUS).
