Employee 's hand crushed when caught in palletizer

Employee #1, a packer for General Mills, Inc., was using WD-40 to lubricate and clean an automatic palletizer. His right hand became caught between a plenum and a moving shaft. His hand was crushed and several fingers broken. He was admitted to White Memorial Hospital for 3 days and then treated as an outpatient. A citation was issued for failing to de-energize the machine before servicing and cleaning. The employer was strongly advised to implement safety rules and regulations to eliminate any similar incidents in the future.
