Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170891923
Event: 05/17/1995
Employee injured when pinned by 1-ton coil of metal

At approximately 11:00 p.m. on May 17, 1995, Employee #1 was working on #3 mill-end weld station. He placed a 5 in. wide, 2,644 lb strand of galvanized 0.076 in. strip metal, used to make a 1 1/4 in. square tube, on the #3 mill coil rack. The total width of the coil bundles was about 3 ft 4 in., whereas the length of the #3 coil rack was 2 ft 10 in. As a result, the last coil hung over the coil rack. Employee #1 was standing in front of the coil bundles while cutting the bands that held the bundles together. When he cut the band from the last bundle, it was displaced due to the overhang. The coil struck Employee #1 on the chest, stomach, and thigh and pinned him against the west end of the coil rack. He was transported to Harbor UCLA Medical Center.
