Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170199475
Event: 02/15/1991
Employee burned by hot water spraying out of storage truck

At approximately 10:00 a.m. on February 15, 1991, Employee #1 was filling a vacuum truck with hot water from a 5,000-barrel-capacity tank at the Texaco USA oil lease in Fellows, CA. After filling the truck, Employee #1 closed the valve on the truck but failed to close the valve on the tank before removing the hose from the discharge pipe. Hot water (approximately 190 degrees F) sprayed over Employee #1, who sustained burns on his arms, legs, chest, and stomach. He was taken by ambulance to Westside Hospital in Taft and then to a doctor in Bakersfield. Later that day he was transferred to the Sherman Oaks Burn Center, where he remained until March 2, 1991.
