Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170153704
Event: 08/16/1991
Employee amputates finger with electric hand saw

Employee #1 was assigned in writing by the supervisor in a wastewater treatment department to cut 55 gallon capacity drums using an electric hand saw with a reciprocating blade. Another employee was assigned to hold the drums. Employee #1 had done this job at least five times. The next night, Employee #1 found the reciprocating saw was locked up and his assistant was not on the job, so he went to his car and got his personal electric hand saw. He proceeded to cut the drums alone. He held the plastic drum lengthwise on the floor with his left hand, while he operated the saw with his right. When the saw stuck in the plastic, it jumped out and cut off his left ring finger below the second joint. Employee #1 was taken to Cedars-Sinai Hospital by the fire department and released the same day.
