Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170188684
Event: 08/13/1990
Employee hospitalized for neck laceration from flying blade

At approximately 7:30 a.m. on August 13, 1990, Employee #1 was operating a large meat chopper (Seydelmann K754VA-V). The blades on this type of meat chopper are covered on top by a heavy-gauge stainless steel cover, which was in place. When a blade broke, a portion of the blade ricocheted off the bottom of the stainless steel bowl, back through the meat, and out of the bowl, and grazed Employee #1 across the back of his neck. The flying blade ricocheted off two other stainless steel structures, denting them, before coming to rest. Employee #1 was knocked unconscious and received a deep laceration on the back of his neck for which he was hospitalized for one week.
