AMPUTATION - HAND CAUGHT IN UNGUARDED TABLE SAW

A CARPENTER FOR AN ELECTRIC UTILITY WAS ASSIGNED TO MAKE CABINETS. HE HAD BEEN USING A ROCKWELL TABLE SAW WITH A CARBIDE-TIPPED BLADE TO CUT AND DADO 4-FOOT-BY-8-FOOT PIECES OF 0.75-INCH PLYWOOD. HE HAD MADE QUITE A FEW PARTS WHEN HE FED AN 18-INCH BOARD THROUGH THE UNGUARDED TABLE SAW. THE BOARD SPUN AROUND, AND THE CARPENTER'S LEFT HAND WAS CAUGHT BY THE RUNNING SAW BLADE. THE EMPLOYEE HAD PARTIAL AMPUTATIONS OF THREE OF HIS FINGERS ON THAT HAND AND WAS HOSPITALIZED FOR HIS INJURY.
