EMPLOYEE FALLS FROM BEAM

AT APPROXIMATELY 2 P.M. ON FEBRUARY 4, 1992, AN INJURY OCCURRED AT A CONSTRUCTION SITE. EMPLOYEE #1 AND A COWORKER WERE STANDING ON A SECOND-FLOOR LEVEL STEEL BEAM THAT CONNECTED OTHER STRUCTURAL STEEL BEAMS. EMPLOYEE #1 HAD JUST OBTAINED CONNECTING BOLTS AND RETURNED TO THE CONNECTING SPOT WHEN A CRANE SWUNG A 10-INCH WIDE BY 15-FOOT LONG BEAM INTO POSITION. THE COWORKER GOT CONTROL OF ONE END, BUT THE OTHER END SWUNG AROUND AND STRUCK EMPLOYEE #1 IN THE BACK, KNOCKING HIM OFF THE BEAM TO THE CONCRETE FLOOR 17 1/2 FEET BELOW. HE WAS TAKEN BY COMPANY VEHICLE TO THE HOSPITAL WHERE HE WAS HOSPITALIZED WITH MULTIPLE LEG AND FOOT INJURIES.
