Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170359095
Event: 09/14/1993
Employee's fingers amputated by chop saw

At about 3:15 p.m. on September 14, 1993, Employee #1, a cabinet installer, was seriously injured while installing wall cabinets. His left index finger and the tip of his left middle finger were amputated while he was cutting crown molding with a chop saw. 911 was called and paramedics transported him to a local medical center for treatment. Doctors performing reconstructive surgery were able to replace the end knuckle of his middle finger by using the amputated tip of his index finger. Employee #1 apparently reached across the blade cutting area for a piece of previously cut molding when his left hand contacted the blade. His right hand had just released the switch as the saw was raised to the up position. The saw was relatively new and no defects were found in its operation.
