Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170168959
Event: 08/27/1991
Employee's eye punctured by needle-like part

At approximately 9:40 a.m. on August 27, 1991, Employee #1 was sitting at her work station when she picked up a part used in the manufacture of computers with her left hand. The part has one end that is a very thin needle-like wire. She turned her head, picked up another piece, and when she turned her head back, she stuck the thin wire under the edge of her glasses. The wire punctured her cornea. Employee #1 jerked the part and the wire came out of her eye. She was immediately taken to Plumas District Hospital and was referred to an ophthalmologist in Reno. Employee #1 did not sustain permanent damage to her eye and the accident did not have to be reported to CAL/OSHA. Employee #1 was an experienced employee and had received safety instructions on her job. No safety or health violations were found.
