Employee's finger severed when saw kicks back

At 11:00 a.m. on March 29, 1995, Employee #1 was repairing the 3:12 pitch roof of a single-story residence. He was ripping 1 in. of a 16 in. long 1 by 4 when the 7 1/4 in. blade of his Makita portable circular saw struck a knot near the end of the cut. The saw kicked back, severing his left little finger. Employee #1 later stated that he had made the cut numerous times before without a problem. The accident resulted from Employee #1 encountering a knot when he was not cutting on a good work surface.
