Investigation Summary
At 9:50 a.m. on August 7, 1994, Employee #1, of Sunsweet Growers, Inc., was working at the prune prep area. He was turning on a steam valve when the valve broke, spraying him with steam. At the same time, an unsecured 4 in. rubber hose, which he had inserted in the top of a 5,000 gal tank, jumped out of the tank and sprayed steam and hot water on his lower body. Employee #1 was able to shut off the valve but not before he received serious first- and second-degree burns to 20 percent of his body including the groin, both thighs, lower abdomen, and upper right arm. Employee #1 required hospitalization. The valve was opened to allow steam to mix with cold water to make hot water to put in the 5,000 gal tank.
