Employee injures arm on sharp edge of chute

On September 7, 1994, Employee #1, of Sunsweet Growers, Inc., the operator of a large fruit processing plant, was working at a distribution chute on a Vis-A-Side. The stainless steel chute had a hinged cover and was set on an incline. Employee #1 was standing on a 24 in. by 14 in. diameter stool cleaning 78 in. above the floor when he fell and caught his right arm on a sharp edge of the chute. He sustained a deep laceration and was hospitalized. Causal factors include an unstable work surface (stool), and the sharp edge of the machine guard.
