Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170203509
Event: 10/11/1990
Employee's hand broken and lacerated in lawn mower

At approximately 10:30 a.m. on October 11, 1990, Employee #1 was adjusting the bedknife-to-reel contact on the rear cutting unit of a Toro Reel Master mower. During the process, he left the engine running and the cutting reels turning. His left hand became caught in the rear cutting unit and he suffered serious lacerations and a broken left hand, for which he was hospitalized for 6 days. According to the manufacturer's operator's manual, prior to each day of mowing or as required, the unit should be checked to verify proper bedknife-to-reel contact. To do this, the manual indicated that the engine should be shut off, the cutting units lowered onto a hard surface, and the tension relieved on the reel drive belt. The manufacturer's procedures were not followed.
