Event: 06/23/1990
Two employees injured when vapors in tanker ignite

At approximately 12:44 a.m. on June 23, 1990, Employees #1 and #2 were loading a nonflammable lube oil product into a tanker truck owned by Don Keith Trucking. Flammable vapors inside the tank ignited and exploded. Employee #1 was blown from the trailer to the ground and suffered a leg injury. He was hospitalized for 4 days at Mercy Hospital in Bakersfield. Employee #2 suffered burns on his neck, ear, and hand; he was treated and released. Although static bonding devices were in place at the time of the accident, it was thought that static electricity probably ignited the vapors.
