Employee's finger lacerated by auger

The employer, Gangi Brothers Packing, was making a test run of tomato product in a newly purchased and refurbished plant. Employee #1 is a maintenance mechanic with 20 years experience. He stated that he understands lockout procedure and knows where the disconnect and motor controller are located. He said he did not think to check the inclined, covered auger to see whether it was still running before removing a drain plug and sticking his finger in to check for foreign material or water.
