Employee's fingers amputated in power saw

At 11:40 a.m. on June 15, 1990, Employee #1, of Sierra Lumber Manufacturers, was trying to manually restart a saw by adjusting a poppet valve. He removed a cover plate that was attached by a thumb screw and was reaching for the valve when a compressed air line burst. Startled, he fell sideways from a squatting position and inadvertently thrust his right hand into the revolving saw blade. Employee #1 suffered amputation of several fingers and was hospitalized. The blade was required by code to be guarded.
