Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170723019
Event: 11/02/1992
Employee killed when struck by falling tree

On November 2, 1992, Employee #1, a choker setter for Graham Logging of Bieber, CA, was at a logging site 5 miles south of Round Mountain, CA. Employee #1 was standing slightly downhill and about 35 ft to one side of a rubber-tired Cat 528 skidder equipped with grapples. The skidder was removing some tree tops and limbs to clear a path to the logs below. As the operator maneuvered the skidder, he evidently moved a downed limb, which bumped a 30 ft tall snag. The snag fell, striking Employee #1 on the head and chest, killing him. The employees were logging a burn area where it was nearly impossible to identify a snag. Investigation did not reveal any violation of regulations in connection with the accident.
