Employee injured in fall from lumber conveyor

Employee #1, of Sierra Pacific Industries, was working in a sawmill as an unscrambler operator, keeping the flow of lumber to a sorting system at a constant level. Part of this job consisted of straightening lumber on another chain conveyor called a rerun belt. The rerun belt was 18 ft above grade and had a walkway with guardrails on one side. The other side had a cable the full length, to which Employee #1 was to hook his safety belt. Employee #1 was straightening lumber on the rerun belt on the side with the cable. He neglected to wear a safety belt. Employee #1 caught his toe and tripped and fell 18 ft to the ground. According to Employee #1, he had been on this job about 4 to 6 weeks and was never trained to use the safety belt.
