Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170195283
Event: 08/14/1990
Employee's fingers amputated and smashed between planks

At 7:15 p.m. on August 14, 1990, a 12 ft long 4 in. deep "cant" (plank) hung up on the edge of a shear as it was cut from a log being sawed. One end of the plank didn't fall onto the outfeed roll case conveyor. Employee #1, a head rig (large double cut band saw) offbearer, grabbed the end of the cant with his left hand and attempted to bounce it down onto the conveyor. He misjudged his timing and the next cant came down on the conveyor and pinched his fingers between the ends of the cants. Employee #1's ring finger was amputated at the first joint and his middle finger was smashed.
