Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170195713
Event: 10/19/1990
Employee's fingertip cut off on table saw

At 10:35 a.m. on October 19, 1990, Employee #1, a cabinet maker with 25 years construction experience, was using a model 66 Powermatic table saw to cut the frame for a shadow box. He was cutting an 18 to 20 in. long by 6 in. wide by 1/2 in. thick piece of oak. The saw blade was set at 45 degrees and he was making a cut when, for some reason, the wood kicked back and his hand slipped forward into the blade. His left index finger was amputated diagonally from the tip through the first joint. He had the shop secretary take him to Feather River Hospital, where his fingertip was reattached. He was working alone and later stated that the guard was in place, which possibly prevented a more serious injury.
