Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170195523
Event: 09/08/1990
Employee's arm injured when caught in nip point of conveyor

At approximately 11:00 a.m. on September 8, 1990, Employee #1 was removing a rock from the nip point of the 56 in. high tail pulley and the 18 in. wide conveyor at an almond hulling plant. The conveyor was on the north side of the facility and was the last dirt elevator on the system. Dirt and debris from the almond hulling process went up this conveyor and into a dump truck. Employee #1 was using a small limb to remove the rock when the limb became caught and his right hand and arm went into the nip point of the moving conveyor. He was taken by ambulance to Enloe Hospital, where he was treated for right arm lacerations, nerve and tendon damage, a compound fracture of the right ulna, a fractured radius, and massive deep tissue injuries. The nip point was not guarded.
