Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170170401
Event: 07/09/1990
Employee injured when struck by falling frame wall

At approximately 8:45 a.m. on July 9, 1990, Employee #1 was on a crew of nine that was attempting to raise a 15 ft tall by 43 ft long wood frame 2 by 6 wall. Six carpenters and three laborers were assigned by the employer along the length of the wall. They had lifted the wall approximately 2/3 of the way to vertical when it became apparent to the employer they were not going to be able to raise it completely. The employer shouted, "Let it go!" to the crew (some of whom did not speak English), and they let the wall fall back to the concrete pad. Employee #1 was struck on the right side of his face while backing away from the falling wall, and knocked to the concrete pad. He was hospitalized with a fractured right cheek, lower back strain, and a shallow cut on the left shoulder.
