Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170170765
Event: 02/13/1991
Employee's finger amputated in jump saw

At approximately 6:00 p.m. on February 13, 1999, Employee #1, of One-O-One Redwood, Inc., a resaw mill operation in Willits, CA, was cutting 10 ft and 12 ft long 2 by 4s using an underhung jump saw. His operating station was on the right side of saw, where most of the stops are located; only the 10 to 12 ft long pieces are located on the left side of the saw. As Employee #1 was reaching for a plank, his right hand passed through the saw when the guard was open. His right foot was still on the guarded foot pedal and he activated the machine as he twisted to his left side, resulting in the amputation of his right little finger. Employee #1 was transported to Howard Hospital in Willits, and later transferred to Davies Hospital in San Francisco. He had worked on various jobs for the company for approximately 1 year.
