Employee injures arm as grinder kicks back

An injury occurred on July 13,1993, at 1:30 p.m. at crane #425, berth 35, Oakland, California. Employee #1 injured himself when the portable grinder he was using to smooth a weld spot kicked back and spun around into his right forearm. The injury occurred because he released his hold and attempted to hold the 17 pound grinder with one hand while it was still running (locked in the ON position), an unsafe operation of a portable grinder. A general violation of 3203(a)(2)--training and retraining of employees in the use of portable grinders--was cited.
