Event: 04/04/1991
ELECTRIC SHOCK & BURN - CONTACT WITH ENERGIZED PARTS

An eight-person power line crew was replacing underground cable for a condominium project. A power line worker on the crew, who had over 20 years of experience, was energizing a 12-kilovolt underground transformer. A coworker was in a cable junction box about 1.5 meters away, using a telephone. As he was trying to locate the correct cable, the first line worker glanced over his shoulder to see what his coworker was doing and brushed across an energized terminal on the transformer. The first employee received an electric shock and caused an electrical fault. He was also burned by the ensuing electric arc. He was hospitalized with second- and third-degree burns to his hands and forearms.
