Employee survives trench cave-in

Employee #1 was working in a trench that measured 2 ft wide and 10 ft deep. The backhoe operator called out a warning as the trench face collapsed. Employee #1 headed for the ladder, but was covered completely by the collapsed trench wall. The backhoe operator immediately began digging Employee #1 out by hand and uncovered his head and part of his torso. A local excavation response team continued the rescue on arrival. Employee #1 was hospitalized overnight, but did survive. No sloping or shoring had been used in the trench.
