Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 14568539
Event: 07/04/1990
Employee killed when struck by falling maple snag

At approximately 7:00 a.m. on July 4, 1990, Employee #1 had just finished felling two small cedar trees, clearing the escape route for a larger fir tree that a coworker was preparing to fell. Employee #1 was standing approximately 12 ft behind and uphill from the fir tree. As the tree started to fall, the coworker turned to get away and saw Employee #1 rolling down the hill. Employee #1 had been watching the coworker when he was struck on the head by a falling maple snag that was located 30 ft uphill and behind the fir tree. He was killed instantly. The snag did not have a heavy lean, nor had it been brushed by any other trees prior to falling.
