Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170576102
Event: 04/19/1996
Employee killed when struck by swinging log

At approximately 7:30 a.m. on March 19, 1996, Employee #1 was limbing trees at the pre-ramp area of a logging site when his chain saw became stuck in one of the trees he was topping. A skidder operator had pulled more trees to the area and was turning the skidder around when Employee #1 motioned for help. The skidder was moving into position in the direction of Employee #1 when its tire struck the butt of another tree that had already been topped. The log popped up, swung to the side, and struck Employee #1 on the side of the head below his hard hat. Employee #1 was administered first aid at the site and transported to the hospital; he died approximately 15 hours later as a result of his injuries.
