Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 971168
Event: 08/17/1989
Employee hand crushed when caught in machine

Employee #1 was winding a coil on a 3 1/2 in. aluminum winding machine. While the machine was still running, he reached behind a guard to feel one of the feed rollers that tends to get a build-up of paint. His fingers became caught in the rollers and were crushed, resulting in multiple fractures for which he was hospitalized. The guard had to be removed to free the employee's hand. A tool is available to check and clean this roller, and employees have been instructed to use this tool and not their hands.
