Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 778001
Event: 07/18/1987
Employee injured jumping from breaking flag pole

Employee #1, a plumber and refrigeration maintenance man, was checking out the food stands in Pioneer Village when he noticed a loose line on the pine flag pole. He untied the line at the bottom of the pole, causing the two flags to come down and one end of the line to go up to the top of the pole. The employee knew it would not be safe to lean an extension ladder against the pole, so he decided to climb the pole to get the end of the rope. When he was near the top of the pole, he heard it crack. He came down the pole a little way and heard the pole crack again. Employee #1 jumped from the pole about 10 ft to the ground. He landed on his feet and received an injury to his back, for which he was hospitalized. The pole was 17 feet tall and was 4 inches in diameter at the bottom and 2 inches in diameter at the top.
