EMPLOYEE INJURED WHEN STRUCK BY FALLING CONCRETE BLOCKS

AT APPROXIMATELY 4:26 ON MARCH 24, 1987, EMPLOYEE #1 CHAINED BACK THE UNLOADING DOOR OF A WASTE CARDBOARD CONTAINED WHICH HAD BEEN LOADED IN THE BACK OF A TRUCK. HE GUIDED THE TRUCK, WITH CARDBOARD CONTAINER, INTO THE COMPACTING SHED. HE WAS ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE TRUCK WHEN THE TRUCK'S DRIVER PULLED THE TRUCK AHEAD. THE LOADING DOOR HAD NOT BEEN CHAINED TIGHTLY ENOUGH AND CAUGHT AGAINST THE WALL OF THE COMPACTING SHED. THE WALL PARTIALLY COLLAPSED, SENDING CONCRETE BLOCKS OVER THE TOP OF THE TRUCK AND CONTAINER. EMPLOYEE #1 WAS STRUCK BY SEVERAL CONCRETE BLOCKS. HE RECEIVED SPINAL INJURIES AND IS CURRENTLY PARALYZED FROM THE NECK DOWN. HE IS IN CRITICAL CONDITION, ON A RESPIRATOR AND UNABLE TO COMMUNICATE. STATEMENTS BY EMPLOYEES INDICATE THAT THIS WALL HAS BEEN STRUCK BY TRUCKS BEFORE.
