EMPLOYEE SLIPS INTO HOT PULP BURNING LEFT FOOT

The #3 Thickener had stopped at the 20 foot pulper which mixes the paper making stock at 140 degrees or hotter. Employee #1 went to close the thickener gate. Employee #1 put his left foot on the flat part of the vat which was covered with wet pulp. As Employee #1 put the gate handle down, his left foot slipped into the 18 inch deep mixture. Employee #1 withdrew his foot and pulled off his shoe and sock quickly but had received 2nd degree burns. There was no railing on the side where he slipped and the toe board was only 1.5 inches above the runoff surface.
