Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 601716
Event: 10/21/1988
Employee breaks back in fall from platform

Employee #1, a masonry laborer, was cleaning up trash on the fifth floor of the Florida Suncoast Dome, which was under construction. A crane, while taking a loaded trash box down to the ground, struck a stack of 16 ft long scaffold planks piled parallel to the guardrails and knocked the end of some planks through the guardrail. The employee stepped outside the guardrails to straighten them up. He was then standing on a 28 in. wide platform with his back to the unguarded edge. As he moved along the planks, he backed off the edge and fell 58 ft. He landed on his back, breaking it.
