Employee on sinking boat dies of hypothermia

On October 1, 1990, Employee #1 and a crew were aboard a vessel that was pulling two barges from Monroe, MI, to Alpena, MI. As the vessel crossed Lake Huron, it was swamped by a huge wave and sank immediately. Three of the four crew members made it safely to the barges. Employee #1, who was wearing a life vest, was washed away. After spending several hours in 52 F degree water, he was overcome by hypothermia and died.
