Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 14396303
Event: 04/13/1993
ELECTRIC SHOCK - CONTACT WITH OVERHEAD LINE THRU METAL POLE

A tree trimmer was performing line-clearance tree trimming work. He was tied off with his safety belt in a crotch of a tree, about 25 feet above the ground. He called down to the ground worker to send up a pruning pole so that he could put the end of his climbing rope over another crotch in the tree, which was 10 feet above him. The tree trimmer lowered his climbing rope, and the ground worker tied the rope to a 13-foot, 11-inch-long aluminum pruning pole that had been lying in the yard of a house. A 14.4-kilovolt overhead power line ran 27 feet above the ground, 6.25 feet away from the crotch of the tree where the tree trimmer was sitting. As the tree trimmer was pulling the aluminum pruner up, it fell across the power line, and he was electrocuted.
