Employee injured when struck on head by falling dead tree

Employee #1 and the company vice president were attempting to fall a 7 in. diameter tree that was in the path of a road widening project the company was performing. The vice president cut the tree with a chain saw, while Employee #1 positioned himself north of the tree to watch it as it fell. The employees were attempting to fall the tree parallel to the existing road. However, the tree fell 90 degrees off target causing an 18 in. diameter dead tree, supported by a limb or branch of the 7 in. tree, to fall and strike Employee #1 on the head. He was hospitalized. The employees were unaware of the dead tree.
