EXPOSURE TO STYRENE VAPOR AND HEAT

STYRENE POLYESTER RESIN WAS BEING APPLIED TO FIBERGLASS CLOTH TO LINE STEEL TANKS IN THE POLLUTION CONTROL ROOM BY AN OUTSIDE CONTRACTOR, A. GREENHALGH CO. INC., 19 MENDON AVE., PAWTUCKET, R. I. TEL. (401) 723-3528. (PLATING TANK WASTE WATER IS TREATED PRIOR TO BEING DISCHARGED TO THE SEWER.) THE DOOR TO THE MAIN PLANT FROM THE POLLUTION CONTROL ROOM WAS OPENED BY THE PLANT ELECTRICIAN. SINCE THE PLANT IS UNDER NEGATIVE PRESSURE, STYRENE VAPORS FILLED THE PRODUCTION AREA. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED. SEVENTEEN EMPLOYEES WERE TAKEN TO STURDY MEMORIAL HOSPITAL EMERGENCY ROOM COMPLAINING OF HEADACHES, DIZZINESS, AND EYE IRRITATION AFTER WAITING OUTSIDE IN THE HEAT FOR ABOUT AN HOUR. FIBERGLASS OPERATIONS WERE CEASED TEMPORAILY AND FANS FROM THE FIRE DEPARTMENT VENTILATED THE AREA.
