Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 202589107
Event: 02/28/2014
Drywall Installer Is Injured in Fall from Scaffold

At 11:30 a.m. on February 28, 2014, Employee #1, a drywall installer employed by a construction contractor doing business as Bolar Ceilings, was working at a commercial building. He was standing on a 9-foot high metal scaffold platform and examining an electrical conduit, the location of which was interfering with the installation of sheetrock on the wall. Employee #1 fell from the edge of the scaffold platform, through the false ceiling tile, and to the surface below, a fall height of 10 feet. Emergency services were called, and Employee #1 was transported to the Eden Medical Center, where he was admitted and treated for multiple spinal fractures and an injury to the left knee. He remained hospitalized until discharge at 4:00 p.m. on March 28, 2014. This incident was investigated by Cal/OSHA. Its investigation determined that the edge of the scaffold platform was unguarded.
