Event: 12/14/2012
Worker Falls Down Stairs, Fractures Wrist and Ribs

At approximately 7:45 a.m. on December 14, 2012, Employee #1, a 74-year-old male electronics technician with University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) was escorting a T-Mobile contracted worker, to the T-Mobile cell site inside of the top level of Storke Tower. Employee #1 fell down a flight of stairs just after entering the first door that leads to the T- Mobile cell site. Employee #1 was feeling along the wall to the left for a light switch when he tumbled down the stairs that descended to the left of the door entrance in the stairwell. The inside of the stairwell was not lit at the time of the incident. It was Employee #1's first time accessing that area of Storke Tower and he had not been oriented to that specific area. Employee #1 suffered a fractured left wrist and four broken ribs when he fell down a flight of stairs. Employee #1 was transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. The employer involved in the incident was a university that employs approximately 10,000 persons.
